Longtime Chugiak resident Clayton "Bud" Markley died June 15, 2003, while vacationing with his family in San Diego, California. He was 75.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, June 24, at Evergreen's Eagle River Funeral Home, 11046 Chugiak Drive. Additional services with burial will be announced at a later date.

Mr. Markley was born in Oakland, Maryland on Aug. 2, 1927, and raised in the farming community of Garret County. His early years were marked by strong interest in hunting, fishing and love of the outdoors.

Mr. Markley was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after serving in the infantry from 1945 to 1947.

Mr. Markley was a farmer, carpenter and mason. He worked mostly on construction projects involving school sites, banks and commercial building. In 1970, the family moved to Chugiak after a camping vacation to the state several years earlier. Mr. Markley was employed by Hess & Sons Auctioneers from 1970 to 1985 and the Chugiak Senior Center from 1986 to 1997.

His family recalled, "Dad was an enthusiastic and inspirational outdoorsman. He will be remembered for canoeing, often without the aid of the actual canoe and trying to catch salmon with his bare hands. He enjoyed road trips, card games and family gatherings with great food. Dad loved to reminisce about his boyhood adventures and had a knack for storytelling. He was a fair and generous man, always ready to lend a hand or leap to someone's aid. He will be forever missed."

Mr. Markley is survived by his wife of 54 years, Norma Markley of Chugiak; sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Judy Markley of Wasilla, Dan and Patty Markley of Medical Lake, Wash.; daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and David Cavitt of Eagle River; grandchildren, Jennifer Markley, Jason Markley, Sarah Markley, Rebekah Markley and Hayley Cavitt; and brother-in-law, Robert Opel of Chugiak.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Chugiak Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 670363, Chugiak, AK 99567. Condolences may be sent to Mrs. Norma Markley, 22232 Inlet Vista Circle, Chugiak AK 99567.
