There will be a memorial service at the Assembly of God Church in Willow at 2 p.m. Saturday, with Pastor Kevin Shumway officiating. A graveside prayer and interment will be at Wasilla Aurora Cemetery following the service.

Mr. Stone was born July 30, 1943, as William Lee Showalter III, to Elizabeth Managhan and William Showalter in New York, N.Y. He resided in New York until moving to Sacramento, Calif., with his family in 1948. He attended C.K. McClatchy High School.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1960. Upon returning from a tour of duty in Japan, he enrolled in Sacramento City College and immersed himself in the Peace and Freedom Movement.

His family wrote, "He committed his life to the pursuit of basic freedoms and justice for the poor. Complications from use of drugs and alcohol led him to desire a clean start. He moved to the deserts of Nevada and worked in recovery programs for three years. Mr. Stone moved to Houston, Alaska, in 1985 throwing off his old self and committing himself to a new life. May his memory be eternal."

He is survived in this life by his beloved girls Lida Mayo and Debbie Engle; his sisters Stephanie Ellis, Judith Showalter and Christina Showalter; brothers-in-law Morrison Ellis and Francis Cicelski; nephews Paul Little and Anthony Showalter; niece Elizabeth Showalter; and great nephew Paul Jacob Little.
