MAT-SU - Artists and art enthusiasts are expected to fill the "Upstairs Gallery" at Mat-Su College tonight, as 21 artists showcase original works during the third annual "Valley Friday Invitational."
Most artists are expected to be on hand during the show to talk about their work, exchange ideas with fellow artists and meet others who appreciate art. Visitors will have a chance to purchase art work during the free event, which runs 5-8 p.m. on Friday.
Artists include Alaskans who are nationally published as well as faculty who teach art classes at the University of Alaska's Mat-Su and Anchorage campuses.
"One thing that came out of it that I didn't anticipate is that the artists themselves were excited about getting to know each other," said Suzanne Bach, fine arts coordinator at MSC. "Most artists have solo shows. They usually know each others names but they don't have the chance to meet and exchange ideas. This is a chance for them to all meet in one spot."
Media include oil and acrylic, drawings, watercolors, graphic design, photography, fiber arts, stained glass and hand-made knives. Many artists will have note cards and small prints at the opening night only.
Original works will stay up through Sept. 23 and can be viewed by appointment. Groups are welcome to reserve one-hour tours of the gallery during the week.
As visitors peruse the gallery and nibble refreshments, music will be provided by pianist Tucker Hurn. Additional music this year will also be provided by husband and wife duo Joel and Naomi Stamoolis, who will play oboe and upright bass.
Bach said one of the goals of hosting art shows is to provide a town-square atmosphere for the public to enjoy art.
"It is a great opportunity to dress up, go out to dinner, and come see some art," she said.
