Colony boys 2nd, girls 3rd at Region III swim championships

SOLDOTNA —The Colony boys and girls swimming and diving squads each landed in the top 3 of the team standings at the Region III Championships Saturday in Soldotna.

Senior Zach Bloom won a pair of events to lead Colony to a runner-up finish in the boys’ standings. Bloom placed first in both the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events to help the Knight finish with 68 points in the team standings. Bloom, who entered the finals as the defending region champion in both events, was dominant, particularly in the 500. Bloom finished with a time of 4 minutes, 58.66 seconds. The senior beat runner-up Jacob Hall of Soldotna by nearly 10 seconds. Bloom used a time of 1:47.27 to win the 200.

Bloom was one of three members of the Colony boys squad to capture first-place finishes. Junior Joseph Anderson was first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.44. Freshman Jake Simmons with first in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 54.34. Both swimmers also scored top-3 finishes in the 200 individual medley. Simmons was second and Anderson finished third.

The Colony boys were also second in the 200 medley relay and third in the 400 freestyle relay.

Kodiak won the boys team title with 131 points.. Soldotna was third with 65 points.

Colony finished with 68 points to finish third in the girls’ team standings.

Senior Sierra Kinworthy posted a pair of runner-up finishes to lead the Knights. She was second in both the 200 and 500 freestyle races.

“I have also tapered Sierra and Zach for state,” Colony head coach Wil Fernandez said in a text to the Frontiersman following the meet in regard to the performance of Kinworthy and Bloom in the 500 freestyle events. “So the excitement has only begun for those two.”

Rachel Crosley finished fourth in both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle for the Knights.

Palmer’s Millie Snelders led the Moose girls to a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke. She was also third in the 50 freestyle. Sarah Hanson finished third in the 200 freestyle for the Palmer girls.

Samantha Belliston led the Wasilla girls with a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley.

Max Snelders was fourth for the Palmer boys in the 100 backstroke.

Valley divers enjoyed a solid weekend at the championships. A combined seven Valley divers scored team points in the finals.

Wasilla’ Braydon Schachle won the boys 1 meter dive, with 407.85 points. He was one of four Valley boys to finish in the top 6. Colony’s Colby Lord was second with 372.35, while Palmer’s Gabe Waldhaus was fourth with 355.65. Colony’s Tanner Belliston was sixth with 330.80 points.

Colony’s Katelyn Foster finished as the runner-up in the girls dive event, with 300.90 points. Palmer’s Samantha Laselle (266.05) and Colony’s Eileen Cyr (256.20) finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Winners of each event at the Region III Championships earn an automatic bid to the state championships, which start Friday at the Bartlett Pool in Anchorage.

Following the meet, Fernandez, Colony’s first-year head coach, was named the Region III Coach of the Year.
