The Colony Knights used a late push to knock off the top-ranked team in the state. The Knights beat Dimond 64-56 in overtime Friday night at Colony High School.
The Knights outscored the Lynx 13-5 in overtime, and used a 22-11 fourth-quarter run to force the extra period. Dimond, which entered the game ranked first in the 4A boys’ class by the Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches, used 17 first-quarter points to take an early lead. Colony is ranked fourth in the latest AABC 4A boys’ poll.
Patrick McMahon led Colony with a game-high 38 points. He scored 27 in the second half and overtime, and nine of Colony’s 13 during the extra period.
Colton Spencer added 15 for Colony. Spencer hit a trio of threes during Colony’s 22-point fourth.
Dimond’s Isaiah Moses hit six three-pointers, and led the Lynx with 26 points.
Valley teams win in Dimond tourney
Palmer and Wasilla earned consecutive wins during the Lady Lynx Shootout at Dimond High School in Anchorage.
Palmer edged Ketchikan 42-41 in the semifinals of the shootout’s maroon bracket Friday. Catherine Uschmann led the Moose with 14 points. Uschmann scored eight of Palmer’s 15 points in the fourth. The Moose outscored Ketchikan 15-10 during the final quarter.
Palmer rallied to beat conference rival Kodiak 40-36 on Thursday. The Moose trailed 20-9 at halftime.
Uschmann led Palmer with 14. Livia Solis added nine.
Wasilla also scored a win in the maroon bracket semifinals Friday, beating conference rival Soldotna 47-28.
Bella Hays led Wasilla with 13 points and seven rebounds. Jazlynn Novelli added nine points and four steals. The Wasilla defense forced 29 turnovers and held the Stars to single-digit scoring in all four quarters.
Wasilla beat defending state champion Dimond 62-44 Thursday. Hays finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Novelli scored a game-high 28.
Colony is the lone Valley team in the event’s gold bracket, and the Knights rebounded with a double-overtime win over West Valley Friday.
Hannah Duguid hit a pair of threes in overtime to lead the Knights to a 61-58 win over the Wolfpack. Duguid finished with 12 points. Tori Schwantes and Indiya Clarke led Colony with 14 each.
Chugiak beat Colony on Thursday.
