The Soldotna girls and Colony boys won the Region III skiing championships at Tsalteshi Trails on Friday and Saturday, led by skimeister-earning performances by SoHi’s Tania Boonstra and Colony’s Coby Marvin.
Marvin finished with a two-day total time of 34 minutes, 24.87 seconds. His combined time in the 5K freestyle and 7.5K classic put him at the top of the boys leaderboard, the first of four Knights in the top four and five in the top 6. Weston Snesabaugh (34:44.12), Gabriel Black (35:06.25) and Raven Spangler (35:23.07) rounded out the top four.
Colony’s Tobias Buchanan (36:16.97) was sixth and Isaac Kristich (37:02.20) placed 10th
In Friday’s freestyle, Marvin, Sensabaugh, Spangler and Black filled the top four spots for Colony. On Saturday, during the classic, Colony again filled the top spots, with Marvin, Black and Sensabaugh at the top of the standings, but it was Kenai’s Greg Fallon who took the fourth place finish at 20:39.29, narrowly beating out Spangler.
Boonstra took the top finish for the girls in both the freestyle on Friday and the classic on Saturday.
Her time in Friday’s freestyle was 16 minutes, 16.33 seconds, roughly 45 seconds ahead of second place-finishing Elliot Sensabaugh from Colony, who closed at 17:02.80. SoHi’s Ariana Cannava closed out the top three less than two seconds later with a time of 17:04.69.
The results of the classic on Saturday look similar, Boonstra led at 23:06.28 and was followed by Sensabaugh at 23:32.80 and Cannava at 23:57.13.
Elliot Sensabaugh finished second overall in the girls class with a two-day total of 40:35.60. Adriana Ramirez (45:14.68) and Breeze Buchanan (45:24.74) finished ninth and 10th overall for the Colony girls.
The Colony girls finished second in the team standings.
Amelia Parker led Palmer with a seventh-place finish in the girls overall standings, and time of 44:10.98. London Lee (37:10.75) placed 11th overall to lead the Palmer boys.
