Colony boys, girls advance in state soccer tourney

The Colony Knights and South Anchorage Wolverines have some history in the boys state soccer tournament. South spoiled Colony’s hopes of a state title, beating the Knights in the 2005 and 2013 state championship games.

The Southcentral Alaska foes met again in another state tourney Thursday. A title was not on the line, but one team was able to move forward.

Eli Krozel scored in overtime to lift the Knights to a 3-2 win over the Wolverines during the ASAA/First National Bank Division I Boys State Soccer Championships quarterfinals in Anchorage. Isaac Smith and Addison Dobbs also scored for the Knights, who move forward to face Service in the Division I semifinals Friday at 7 p.m. at Service High School.

Colony is the defending state champions. The Knights won it all in 2019. The 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Colony girls also advanced in the Division I bracket. The Knights beat Chugiak 3-1 Thursday, Emily Moses scored twice, and Silvana Saucedo also scored a goal.

Colony will face Dimond Friday at 3 p.m. at West Anchorage in the state semis.

Wasilla suffered a tough loss in the Division I girls quarterfinals, falling to South Anchorage 3-2 in overtime. Kelsey Walker and Chloe Dolman scored for the Warriors. Wasilla will play West in an elimination game Friday at 11 a.m. at Eagle River.

Valley teams finished 0-3 in the Division II tournaments. Thunder Mountain beat Redington 4-0 and Juneau-Douglas got past Palmer 3-0 in the girls tournament,

Palmer will play North Pole at 1 p.m. and Redington will face Monroe Catholic at 3 p.m. in elimination matches at Eagle River.

Soldotna beat Palmer 4-0 in the Division II boys semifinals. The Moose face North Pole Friday at 9 a.m. in the consolation semifinals.
