Colony boys, girls finish 3rd in Region III track meet

KENAI — The Colony Knights had a hold on the Kardinals Friday in terms of points, but admitted defeat by the end of the Region III Track and Field Championships Saturday.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Knights were bested by Kenai and Soldotna, who scored 153 and 121 points, respectively, to Colony’s 99. For the boys, it was the Kodiak Bears who came out on top both days with a total score of 154, followed by Kenai at 111 and a narrow miss by Colony at 110.

But, Colony head coach Tom Lincoln said the Knights gained a lot of personal records this weekend, and there should be more to come. He was a little concerned about peaking early going into the region meet, but he isn’t too worried about that now.

“After seeing the kids perform I think we’re right on target (for state),” Lincoln said.

The Knights had some big guns in the boys’ sprint races, he said, with junior Hunter Harwood leading the charge. Harwood bested Valley rival Jared Layton of Palmer in the 100-meter race by .04 seconds for the win, and claimed a region record in the 200 with a time of 23.05. Colony’s 400 and 800 relay teams — consisting of Harwood, Heita Kitagawa, Jacob Davis and Steven Bilafer — also took second and third, respectively.

The team that beat them? Palmer stars Layton, Chase Ferris, Nick Daniels and Tyler Spatz.

“We knew that we’d have a good chance in the 4x2 and we knew the 4x1 would be close,” said Palmer head coach Tim Popowski. “It was pretty close.”

Results were not finalized as of press time but Popowski said the boys ran another 1:33-plus to match their performance last weekend in the 400.

Despite missing the mark on the relays, Lincoln said the Colony boys’ team has performed better than usual individually. The fact that Colony’s sprinters have done so well this season is a bit of an anomaly, he said, as the boys’ team usually better dominates the longer races.

“Kodiak was deep in the distance and we just didn’t have that,” Lincoln said.

Jill Bowker posted the highest finish in the distance races for the Knights, finishing third in the girls’ 3,200-meter run.

“The Kenai girls are just kind of a well-rounded team overall,” Lincoln said.

The majority of Colony’s points were scored in the field events, with junior Chase Stevens grabbing four wins in the high jump, long jump, triple jump and 100-meter hurdles. Her male counterpart, sophomore Brandon Nicholson, also won the triple and high jumps, took third in the long jump and finished second in the 400-meter dash.

Lincoln said the pair were voted MVPs by the team for regularly scoring the most points for their team individually, in addition to just being good teammates.

“Brandon is usually a 40-point kid, and so is Chase,” Lincoln said.

Other top scorers for the Knights include Melvin Charles-White, who took third in the 300 hurdles, senior Isaiah Tira, who took third in the 110 hurdles, and Anna Condio took second in the long jump. Maria Cucullu also took second in the triple jump, and the girls’ 4x200 team took second in their relay.

In the discus, Asa Walling took third for the Colony boys and Kristina Tennesen took third for the girls.

Wasilla’s top scorer at the meet was Sylvia Tuisaula, who won the girls’ shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 10.5 inches, almost a foot farther than runner up Annie Quinn of Soldotna. Tuisaula’s teammate, Demi Glenn, finished third with 33-11.5. Tuisaula also took fifth in girls’ discus.

Sophomore Ceil Dunleavy, last year’s state champion in the high jump, also scored high for the Warriors, jumping 5 feet 4 inches to “tie” with Colony’s Stevens.

Riley Burroughs was Wasilla’s top runner for the weekend, placing fourth in the 3,200-, 1,600- and 800-meter runs.

Ruby Woodings led the Lady Moose in the running, finishing third in the 400, just ahead of teammate Rya Berrigan.

Coach Popowski said he’s looking forward to seeing his relay teams at state and hopes a few more individuals will qualify.

“We’re just gonna keep working, he said. “We hope to be pretty successful and get kids on podium at state.”
