The Colony girls lost their first two games at the Best of the West Tournament in Chino Hills, Calif.
On Wednesday, the Knights dropped a 53-48 decision to Canyon (Calif.) High. Then on Thursday, Colony fell 44-38 to Long Beach Jordan High on Thursday.
Against Chino Hills, the Knights were led by Alex Coon and Allie Grazulis with 16 points each, while Haylee Hotchkiss added eight.
In an email from the tournament, Colony coach Don Witzel said the Knights had their chances against both teams.
“We had plenty of opportunities to win, missed some easy chip shots, and gave up some easy ones as well,” Witzel wrote of the Canyon game.
Against Long Beach Jordan, Witzel said his team kept things close throughout but could never pull in front.
“We were down 38-36 with a couple minutes left, then had to foul in the closing minute, which enabled them to stretch their lead.”
Colony boys eighth at Kentucky tournament
The Colony boys team went 0-3 at the Gaslight Holiday Classic in Louisville, Kentucky.
In the tournament’s opening-round game, the Knights ran into undefeated Jeffersontown High, losing 72-44 Dec. 21 to fall into the consolation round. Jeffersontown went on to win the tournament.
The Knights had two close games in the following rounds, losing to Graves County (Ky.), 52-48 on Dec. 22. Grant Niver led the Knights with 16 points.
In the 7th/8th place game, the Knights again dropped a tight one, falling to Franklin-Simpson (Ky.), 59-52 in the final game.
Hawks girls competing
in San Diego
Results for the Houston girls’ game against Ballard, Washington at the San Diego Surf and Turf Tournament were unavailable. The Hawks are playing in the “Surf” division at the tournament, which runs through Saturday.
