Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

PALMER — The Alaska track world already knew Peggy Mathis is dominant on the track. But as it turns out, the Colony junior is pretty dangerous in the jumps too.
Mathis, in her first year as a long jumper, recorded a second-place finish in the event, adding that to three individual titles in the sprint races during the Region III Championships track and field meet at Palmer High School.
Mathis, who won three individual state championships as a sophomore at Wasilla High last season, entered the 2014 region meet as the defending Region III champion in the 100-, 200-, 400- and 800-meter events. Mathis could have tried to repeat her four-peat this season, but opted to take a jump at her new event.
“I wanted to try it out,” Mathis said Saturday. “It’s something different.”
Mathis had focused on the running events as an underclassman, but had the chance to try to event during a Mat-Su Mini track meet early in the year.
“I tried it out one day because we have the mini meets, and opportunities to try out different things. I tried the long jump, and the coach said, well Peggy, you can be competitive. I decided it’s something I’m willing to compete in.”
Mathis finished with a mark of 15 feet, 10.5 inches, falling just an inch short of first-place. Mathis’ Colony teammate, Chase Stephens, won the event with a mark of 15-11.5.
“It was 800 or the long jump, and my heart’s more into the long jump,” Mathis said. “I want to try to win state in that.”
Mathis said taking the 800 off her schedule also gives her more time to rest and focus on the three other running events.
“Not having the 800, you have plenty of time. The 100 is at the beginning, the 400 is at the middle of the day and the 200 is at the end,” Mathis said.
In her running events, Mathis posted three more convincing wins. She won the 100 with a time of 12.94, posted a 25.94 in the 200 and 57.41 in the 400.
Mathis also helped Colony win seven individual events, and run away with the girls’ team title. The Knights finished with 173 total points, well ahead of runner-up Soldotna (119) and third-place Kenai (109). Wasilla was fourth with 60 points and Palmer finished sixth.
Chase Stephens also won three events for the Knights, finishing first in the 100 hurdles, long jump and triple jump. Stephens edged teammate Natalie Lautrup in the 100 hurdles, using a time of 16.13 to edge Lautrup’s mark of 16.98. In addition to her mark of 15-11.5 in the long jump, Stephens hit 35-2.5 to win the triple jump.
Lautrup was also a winner for CHS, finishing first in the 300 hurdles.
Freshman Ceil Dunleavy led the Wasilla Warriors with a win in the high jump, hitting a mark of 5-2. Dunleavy’s mark is also the best in the state so far this season. Alex Mathis finished second in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600 for Wasilla, and Mariah Burroughs second in the 1.600 and fourth in the 800.
The Colony boys also boasted a three-event winner. Lucas Jones won the 100, 200 and long jump to help Colony finish first in the boys team standings.
Jones used a time of 11.75 to win the 100, and finished first in the 200 with a mark of 23.55. Jones also finished first in the long jump, with a mark of 19-6.75. Colony won the boys team standings with 152 points, finishing just ahead of region power Kodiak (143 points). Wasilla was fourth and Palmer finished fifth.
Jones was one of three Knights to win individual events in the 4A boys class. Brandon Schafer won the 400 with a time of 52.69. Brandon Nicholson was first in the triple jump, hitting 40-1.5, and won the high jump.
Matt Thomas led the Wasilla boys with a win in the 300 hurdles.
The Palmer Moose finished second in both the 400 and 1,600 relay events.
