FAIRBANKS — Host Monroe Catholic held on for a 47-32 win over Colony in the title game of the Mt. McKinley Bank Classic at Monroe Catholic School in Fairbanks Saturday night.
Colony outscored Monroe, the defending 3A state champions 23-21 in the second half, but it was Monroe's 26-9 first-half lead that led to the victory. Colony was scoreless during the second quarter. Nathan Umbarger led the Knights with nine points.
The Knights used a 54-44 win over Lathrop Friday to improve to 2-0 in the round-robin tourney and advance to the title tilt with the Rams. Senior Hunter Eisenhower scored 22 points for the Knights Friday, and Colony survived a 14-2 Lathrop third-quarter run.
Colony led 21-7 after the first quarter.
Damien Fulp added 14 points in the victory over the Malemutes and Gray chipped in 10.
In girls' action, Colony scored a big 41-37 overtime win over 2012 state runner-up West Valley, but the Wolfpack were crowned champions in the round-robin tourney. Colony, West Valley and Nome all finished with 2-1 records in the three-day event, but the Wolfpack allowed the fewest points in the tourney and won the tiebreaker.
Faith Farris scored a game-high 17 points for Colony, which outscored West Valley 7-3 in OT. Mary Klapperich added seven.
On Friday Nome snuck past Colony 50-47. Klapperich scored 21 points for the Knights. Izzy Tweed added 13.
