Colony boys second, Moose girls third at Homer Invitational swim meet

HOMER — If the Homer Invitational is any indication, the Palmer Moose should be among the top tier of girls teams in Region III this season.

Palmer, which finished third in the region championships last season, notched third place at the Homer Invitational Saturday in Homer.

Kodiak was virtually uncontested en route to the region title last season, scoring nearly twice the team points as runner-up Soldotna. But things during the two-day Homer Invite were a bit different, with the top three teams separated by only 6.5 points in the team standings.

Kodiak finished first with 70, followed by Soldotna’s 67.

Palmer used wins in a pair of races to finish third in the standings with 63.5. Katie Stark notched a time of 25.80 seconds and won the 50-yard freestyle, finishing just ahead of teammate Naomi Graham (26.10). Stark, Graham, Noelle Graham and Sarah Hanson combined to post a time of 3:51.38 and won the 400-yard freestyle.

Stark was also third in the 100 freestyle. Jordyn Garrettson (1-meter diving) and Millie Snelders (100 breaststroke) also posted third-place finishes.

Sierra Kinworthy led the fourth-place Knights with a win in the 100 butterfly and a runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle.

Colony led Valley boys teams with a runner-up finish in the team standings. Zach Bloom used a pair of wins to help the Knights finish with 77 points in the standings. Kodiak won the team title with 145.

Bloom finished first in the 200 freestyle, enjoying a three-second win over Blake James of Kodiak. Bloom finished in 1:51.55. Bloom also won the 500 freestyle, finishing 23 seconds ahead of River Hanson of Kodiak.

Bloom had a hand in a third win, combining with Joseph Anderson, Alex Kessler and Gaven Nelson to win the 400 freestyle.

Kessler (100 breaststroke), Nelson (100 freestyle), Anderson (200 IM) and Larkin Udomporn (50 freestyle) also finished second during individual events.

Daniel Jackson finished third in the 50 free to lead the sixth-place Palmer boys.

Valley teams will participate in the Kenai Invitational, slated for Sept. 20-21.

The next Valley meet is the Palmer Invitational, which is scheduled to start Oct. 17 at the Palmer Pool at Palmer High School.
