SOLDOTNA — Some see the Skyview Invitational as a sneak preview of the Northern Lights Conference championships. If that’s true, a pair of Mat-Su teams should be in the running for the conference crown.
The Colony boys and Wasilla girls claimed team titles at the Skyview Invitational in Soldotna on Saturday.
Colony senior Matt Jaronik won three events and finished second in another to lead the Knights to the boys’ team title. Jaronik, the defending NLC champion in the 200 and 400 meters, won the 100, 200 and 400 on Saturday. He was also second in the long jump on Friday. Anthony Bricker also posted a win for the Knights, finishing first in the 110-meter hurdles.
Devon Teeling led third-place Wasilla with a first-place finish in the shot put. Teeling was also second in the discus.
The Knights finished with 107.25 total points, well head of second-place Kenai Central’s 81.
The Wasilla girls also scored a lopsided win in the team standings.
Freshman Dajanae Harris and sophomore Morgan Dampier each won events to help Wasilla collect 120 overall points.
Harris edged Dampier to win the 100 and Dampier finished first in the 800.
Wasilla’s team of Keri Clump, Alison Kelley, Jenna Ford and Mandi Rinngenberg coasted to a win in the 3,200-meter relay. The Warriors finished 13 seconds ahead of second-place Soldotna.
A trio of Colony athletes won events to help the Knights finish third in the team standings. Shellina Irwin won the shot put and finished second in the discus. Laura Maresh was first in the long jump and Taylor Stewart won the triple jump.
Danielle Barney, the state runner-up in the discus last year, won the discus to lead the Houston Hawks. Bailey Stevenson won the high jump to lead Susitna Valley.
