The Colony High School Jr. ROTC cadets have teamed up with a local service organization to build an ice skating rink for the public to use.
The CHS JrROTC B Company, in coordination with the Palmer Elks Lodge, built an ice rink at Barry's Resort on Finger Lake, behind the Elks Lodge, as a fall semester service learning project.
The cadets have been maintaining the ice, which includes shoveling snow, hot mopping the ice, hanging lights and organizing and running all the rink events.
Some events planned for the new ice rink include a hot dog night, hockey night and figure skating night.
The rink is open every night from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with special family-oriented events every Friday, in coordination with Palmer Elks Lodge dinners.
The Palmer Elks Lodge does not have any skating gear, so users must bring their own.
Parents are encouraged to come watch their children skate, and Elks Lodge members are also monitoring all activity on the ice rink to ensure safety.
Organizers said the lodge will be open from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. so skaters can come in and warm up, as well as have food or drink.
