PALMER — The Colony Knights dismantled the Chugiak Mustangs 51-0 Friday night at Pride Field at Colony High School. The Knights dominated the game in complete fashion on offense, defense, and special teams.
Chugiak was hoping to catch the Knights off guard on the opening kickoff, but their onside attempt was touched illegally and Colony started the game with great field position. Senior quarterback Eric Christy started with a hot hand that wouldn’t slow down. On the first play from scrimmage, Christy rifled a pass to Ridge Raval over the middle, who made defenders miss and sprinted to the end zone. Christy completed his first five passes and Colony would score on seven of its eight offensive drives. Christy lead all rushers with 152 yards on 13 carries with two scores and added 122 yards passing, completing 6 of his 11 attempts.
After Christy scored from eight yards out with less than 10 seconds left in the first half, Colony recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Christy made another mad dash for the end zone on the last play of the half, breaking tackles and cutting across the field in an attempt to score twice in under ten seconds. He burned the Chugiak defense for 31 yards to end the half, but came up short of scoring.
Noah Krozel tacked on a 25-yard field goal at the end of the first quarter. Zane Vrvilo, Kaiden Jimenez and backup quarterback Ryan Murphy all found the end zone on the ground for Colony. .
“He did pretty good. He surprised me. He got his first varsity touchdown. That was a big play for him. I was proud,” Vrvilo said.
Colony’s defense was nearly as aggressive as the offense. Chugiak struggled to get a consistent running game going against the menacing Colony defense. Chugiak quarterback Quentin Wilson spent much of the second half frantically trying to avoid the incoming terror of Vrvilo, a senior linebacker. Cornerback Julian McPhail had his hands on the ball as many times on defense as he did on offense, breaking up passes and dishing out hard hits on the sidelines. McPhail picked off a Wilson pass deep in his own territory and made a run for the end zone some 90 yards away, but Wilson beat him to the sideline for the touchdown saving tackle, despite McPhail’s 50 yard interception return. The defensive backs were led by Ridge Raval in their attack on Mustang receivers. Raval broke up a would-be touchdown with a bone rattling hit on the receiver just as the ball arrived. Colony also finished off Chugiak’s first offensive drive of the second half with a score. Isaac Richardson blocked Thomas Sitz’ punt attempt and fell on it in the end zone for a defensive touchdown for the Knights. Clearly bothered by the impending pressure, Sitz bounced his next punt off of his own offensive linemen and Colony recovered at the Chugiak 15 yard line. Jimenez scored two plays later.
“We’re just going to go out there do what we do best and play Colony football,” Christy said.
