Colony continues to promote from within

PALMER - The Colony High School administration would like to be known for its desire to promote its athletic coaches from within.

Jamie Mayo, head coach of the Knight football program, and Jeff Bowker, head coach of the Colony boys basketball squad, are both recent examples.

And now Amy Carter can be added to that list.

Carter, a longtime assistant coach with the Knight volleyball squad, has been named head coach of the Colony volleyball program.

Carter replaces Faith Scott, who stepped down earlier this year.

"The main thing, she has been with the program and we certainly like to promote from within," Colony High activities director Mike Boyd said. "We want to have the reputation, if you work at Colony as an assistant coach, you will one day get your shot as a head coach."

Carter has spent 12 years on the Colony bench, and directed the Knight C-team. Prior to arriving at Colony, Carter taught at Houston Junior-Senior High School and coached for two years in the Houston middle school volleyball program.

She is a graduate of Wasilla High School, and played volleyball for the Warriors.

As the Knights volleyball program ventures into the Carter era, fans should not expect dramatic change from Scott's tenure, Carter said.

"We're somewhat similar. We coached together and bounced ideas off each other for lots of years," Carter said. "She did a lot of good things. I have a little different personality, but you probably won't notice that much game-wise."

Carter said even though she has a slightly different personality, by coaching on the same staff as Scott for seasons, the pair developed a similar style.

"They have worked together for so many years, I am sure there is not going to be a lot of change," Boyd said. "but everybody has their own bag of tricks."
