Colony Days kicks off this morning

PALMER -- One of Alaska's coziest community celebrations gets started today in Palmer, as Colony Days kicks off in flag-waving fashion.

This year's theme is "Flags, Flowers and Fun," and the schedule of events reflects those thoughts.

The fun gets started at 10 a.m. today, with the start of the sidewalk chalk art contest. People have to check in at the Palmer Depot and then start drawing. Then the Friday Flings' live music begins at 11:30 a.m. across from the Palmer Visitors' Center, with the Landscaper's Market getting started a half-hour later, at noon.

Throughout the day, the Pinewood Derby, the small quilt auction and a Little League tournament take place. Cub Mobile races go from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and live entertainment will take place in the festival area from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A custom car rally is slated for 7 p.m. as well.

On Saturday, Colony Days gets really gets going.

In the morning, there is a pancake breakfast hosted in the Salvation Army building by the Palmer Pioneer Lions, and a 10:30 a.m. flag ceremony at American Legion Post 15. The highlight of the festival is the annual parade, which gets rolling through downtown Palmer at 11 a.m.

Throughout the day, there is an outdoor quilt show, an antique engine display, several markets as well as several exhibits. There will be free hay rides throughout the afternoon, along with games for the kids.

The festival area is filled with various activities on both days, including performances by the Air Force Band, bellydancing performances and the Mat-Su College Community Band.
