Four Colony High School freshmen earned top honors in an international competition recently, accounting for more than half of the award winners.

The students won awards in the United Nations Association of the USA, Alaska Chapter's "What Does Peace Mean to Me" art, poetry and essay contest.

Katelyn Baldwin earned an honorable mention, Kimberly Gallardo took third place and Audrey Smith and Brittany Heck tied for second place in the competition that attracted 119 entries from three countries.

Colony students took four of the top seven places in the international contest, giving the Knights quite a showing.

The students were presented their awards at the Alaska Native Heritage Center earlier this month. Anchorage School District Superintendent Carol Comeau addressed the students at the awards presentation and spoke about peace.

"Peaceable classrooms are possible where there is a feeling of community," Comeau said.

The Alaska chapter is going to publish the art contest winners in a calendar for next year, and the poetry and essay winners will appear in a peace pamphlet being prepared by the organization.
