Colony's bid to upset top-ranked Juneau came up short Saturday afternoon in a 14-7 nonconference loss at Colony.

Juneau came to Colony undefeated and ranked first in the state, but escaped with a win in a game dominated by defense and marred by penalties.

The Knights' offense struggled, continually faced with third-and-long situations. Juneau's defense stacked the line of scrimmage to stop the run. The defense played an outstanding game, shutting down Juneau's prolific passing game and keeping the Knights close.

In Juneau's opening drive, quarterback Bret Fairchild enjoyed his only real success, passing the Crimson Bears into Colony territory and spreading the Knights' defense. Colony stopped the drive when Doug Lampton intercepted an errant Fairchild pass and returned it to Colony's 49-yard line.

The drive stalled and Colony was forced to punt.

On Colony's next drive from its own 13-yard line, quarterback Joe Reza threw an interception that was returned to the Colony 9-yard line.

Juneau running back Sione Tupou took the first play and ran it into the end zone for the first score of the game.

The extra point was good, giving Juneau the 7-0 lead with 30 seconds left in the first quarter.

Colony's special teams unit provided the first big break during a Colony punt. Doug Lampton's solid hit on the ball carrier knocked the ball loose and Jake DeBuck recovered it on Juneau's 35-yard line. The offense was unable to capitalize. Two incomplete passes and a quarterback sack forced Colony to punt again.

Juneau started the drive on its own 6-yard line and drove the length of the field to score a touchdown with eight seconds remaining in the first half. After the extra point, Juneau led 14-0.

Colony was finally able to break through with a score when Doug Lampton caught a swing pass to the left side and rumbled through several Crimson Bears on his way to a 28-yard touchdown.

After the extra point, Colony cut the lead to 14-7 with four minutes and 12 seconds left in the third quarter.

Another Colony fumble recovery, this time by David Craig, gave Colony the ball on Juneau's 29-yard line. The offense was only able to advance to the 27-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.

Colony's defense continued to hold, but the offense couldn't make up the difference in the game. Juneau held on to win 14-7.

Colony hosts Wasilla Friday at 7 p.m. in Colony's homecoming game.

Houston rolls over ACS

The Houston Hawks beat Anchorage Christian School 33-6 Saturday in a game that was much tougher than the score indicated.

Houston suffered injuries to many key players throughout the game, calling on the reserve players to come in and continue the game.

Houston's David Smith, Travis Webb, Josh Sherman, and Roland Treshem all fell to injuries during the game.

"We had a lot of people step up," said Houston head coach Mat Bredberg. "Taylor Richey and Travis Smith stepped in with tremendous efforts to help us win today."

Houston hosts Soldotna Saturday at 4 p.m. in Houston's homecoming game.
