PALMER — Colony junior Robert Haan used an individual title to help the Knights wrestle to a runner-up finish in the Lancer Smith Memorial Saturday evening at Palmer High School.
Haan, one of four Knights in the championship round, scored a victory in an all-Colony 170-pound final to win a weight class at the Lancer Smith for the second straight season. Haan pinned teammate Jordan Nero at the 4-minute, 31-second mark of the match. Last season, Haan claimed the 160-pound title of the tournament.
Levi Hopkins and Chace Booth also advanced to the finals for the Knights, who finished second in the team standings with 178.5 total points. Hopkins was second at 120 pounds, and Booth finished second at 145.
South Anchorage used 224.5 total points to win the 45-team Lancer Smith, a tournament known as the toughest and deepest regular season prep wrestling event in Alaska.
Wasilla notched a pair of individual titles and a fourth-place finish in the team standings. Defending state champion Micah Mathis earned a 9-1 major decision victory over South’s David Lincoln in the 113-pound title. Samuel Wolff pinned Grace Christian’s Evan Bockman in the 138-pound final. Dillon Simpson and Berit Sturgeon also advanced to the finals for Wasilla, placing second at 126 and 132 respectively.
Colony placed nine grapplers in the top 6 of the respective weight classes. Wasilla had eight in the top 6.
Susitna Valley heavyweight Marshall Pinard also advanced to the finals, and placed second.
