It took extra time, but the Colony Knights girls soccer squad is moving forward.
Sophomore Avrie Giegerich scored during the final minutes of the second overtime frame to push Colony to a 2-1 win over Service during the quarterfinal round of the ASAA/First National Bank Division I State Soccer Championships Thursday at Colony High School.
Giegerich scored both goals in the Colony win to help the fifth-seeded Knights get past the fourth-seeded Cougars. The Knights now face top-seeded South Anchorage Friday at 5 p.m. in the semifinals. The Wolverines blasted West Anchorage 9-0 in the quarters.
The Colony boys, the defending state champions, also moved forward with a 4-1 over Chugiak. Isaac Villa led the Knights with two goals and an assist. Johnny Figgins added a goal and an assist. Matthew Crawford also scored.
The Knights are the No. 2 seed in the 2024 tournament. Colony will now play Dimond Friday at 7 p.m, in the semifinals at Colony High. The Lynx edged West Valley 1-0.
In the Division II tournament, the Palmer boys also scored a win in the first round. The Moose beat Kenai 2-1. Johnny Doland put Palmer on the scoreboard, with a goal off a header from a corner kick. Aiden Kent scored the game-winner for PHS.
Fourth-seeded Palmer will face top-seeded Soldotna Friday at 3 p.m. in the Division II semis at Wasilla High. SoHi beat Kodiak 11-0.
In the Division II girls tournament, top-seeded Juneau-Douglas beat Palmer 5-0.
Palmer now faces Monroe Catholic in an elimination game Friday at 9 a.m. at Palmer High.
