Colony girls beat Chugiak in consolation semifinals

ANCHORAGE — It was a familiar foe, but unfamiliar territory for the Colony Knights.

In a rematch of the last two girls 4A state title games, Colony used a 12-point fourth quarter to score a 31-22 win over the Chugiak Mustangs during the consolation semifinals of the ASAA/First National Bank 4A State Basketball Championships at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage on Tuesday.

Colony earned the edge in the defensive battle, holding the Mustangs to single digits in scoring in all four quarters and 16 percent shooting overall. Chugiak hit only six shots from the field.

“If you can’t shoot, you can’t win,” Chugiak head coach Tracy Adams said bluntly after the game.

The Knights didn’t shoot much better, hitting only six field goals and 19 percent of their shots, but were helped by a high number of Chugiak fouls and turnovers. The Mustangs finished with more turnovers (26) than points (22), and were tagged with 23 fouls in the game.

Colony took advantage, shooting 61 percent from the foul line. Seventeen of Colony’s 31 points came from the free-throw line.

Sophomore Alyssa Hutchins led the Knights with a team-high 10 points in the win. Hutchins hit a pair of three-pointers, shot 4-of-7 from the three-point line and grabbed a pair of steals. Junior Kate Klapperich added nine points in the win. Junior Tess Forstner grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in the win.

The Knights and Mustangs met in both the 2008 and 2009 state title games. Colony won the championship in 2008 and Chugiak edged the Knights for the crown last season.
