Colony girls dominate Lathrop Invite, boys finish 2nd

FAIRBANKS — The Colony Knights ran away with the girls team title during the Lathrop Invitational Saturday in Fairbanks.

Led by a clean sweep in the sprint events by junior Peggy Mathis, Colony amassed 230 total points in the team standings, and finished 75 points ahead of runner-up Lathrop. Mathis, who won three individual state titles as a member of the Wasilla Warriors on the same Lathrop track last season, finished first in the 100-, 200-, 400- and 800-meter events.

Mathis also set a state best for the 2014 season, clocking a time of 58.26 seconds in the 400.

Mathis helped the Knights earn eight individual wins. Chase Stephens won a pair of events for the Knights, finishing first in the long jump and 100 hurdles. Natalie Lautrup won the 300 hurdles and Maria Cucullu finished first in the triple jump for Colony High.

Colony placed at least one athlete in all 13 individual events in the meet. Three Knights placed in the top 8 of the high jump, 300 hurdles, 800 and 1,600 events.

Colony also won three of the four relay events, running to victories in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 relays.

The Colony boys finished second in the team standings with 145 points. Christian Sessom (1,600) and Lyon Kopsack (3,200) each earned individual wins. Like the girls, the Colony boys also won three of four relay events, grabbing first-place finishes in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 relays. The Colony boys placed athletes in the top 8 in 10 of the 13 individual events.
