ANCHORAGE — Wins over No. 3 and No. 2 has set up Colony for a date with No. 1.
Sixth-seeded Colony followed its win over third-seeded East Anchorage with a 48-46 win over West Anchorage, the No. 2 seed, during the semifinal round of the ASAA/First National Bank 4A State Basketball Championships in Anchorage on Friday.
Juniors Faith Farris and Sarah Bonn combined for three key free throws during the final 36 seconds of overtime to help the Knights upset West and move into the state title game, where they will face top-ranked Kodiak Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Sullivan Arena.
Colony scored seven of its nine overtime points from the free throw line. Farris opened the extra period with a steal and a layup to break the 39-39 tie. Farris was also 5 for 6 from the stripe during overtime.
Jennifer Solano also hit a free throw in overtime.
Farris and Izzy Tweed scored a game-high 14 points each for the Knights. Solano added seven points and eight rebounds. Bonn finished with five points. Bonn also had one rebound, but it was one of Colony’s biggest rebounds of the game. With Colony leading by three, Bonn snagged an offensive rebound after a missed Colony free throw. She drew a foul, and followed with a free throw of her own. That free throw gave Colony the two-possession lead with 36 seconds left in overtime.
With the win, Colony advanced to the state title game for the first time since 2009.
In boys’ action, West Anchorage beat Colony 46-32 in the semifinals. Colony will play in the boys third-place game Saturday at 10:45 a.m. at the Sullivan.
