PALMER — Last year, the Colony Knights girls cross-country running squad captured the Region III title by the slimmest of margins. This year, the Knights have been working to distance themselves from the remainder of the Region III pack.

Colony, which edged Soldotna with the tiebreaker in the Region III Championships team standings last year, has beat the next closest region rival by at least 15 points in every meet this season. Saturday, Colony finished third overall in the Palmer Invitational with 80 total points. Kenai was the next Region III team in the standings, placing sixth with 136.

Colony coach Rhonda Knopp said, while that might not be the focal point heading into a meet, the Knights certainly want to be ahead of their rivals.

“You’re always looking at your region. You’re always looking to be first in the region,” Knopp said. “But the most important thing, is we want to get to state. Stay healthy, be consistent and do our best.”

Knopp was third with her team’s third-place finish in a field that included incredibly deep teams such as West Valley and West Anchorage.

“Fabulous. I couldn’t be happier,” Knopp said of her team’s work. “We were up against some really deep, really big teams. These girls were just fabulous.”

The Knights have now placed in the top 3 of all four meets this year.

Colony placed four runners in the top 19 of the 4A girls’ varsity race to finish third overall in the team standings.

Sophomore Jill Bowker was third overall to lead the Knights, posting a time of 19 minutes, 24 seconds.

“It felt good. It was hard, but I pushed it,” Bowker said of her race after the meet.

The time marked continued improvement for the sophomore this season. Bowker has shaved time off in every meet this year, following the 20:09 she ran in the season-opening Colony Invitational. Her time Saturday was about four seconds faster than the 19:28 she posted at the Bartlett State Preview Meet last week.

“I’m really pleased with it,” Bowker said. “I wanted to get back into the 18s where I was last year, but I’m pleased with this. It’s faster than last week.”

Knopp praised the work of the sophomore, noting her ability to excel mentally during the race, which includes three loops on the Michael Janecek Running Trails.

“She ran a smart race, very patient,” Knopp said of Bowker. “She stayed focused for the three loops and made her move when she needed to.”

Cathelyne Powers (13th, 19:59), Jordyn Block (18th, 20:15) and Elisabeth Bowker (19th, 20:17) also earned top-20 finishes for the Knights. Knopp also noted the work of her fifth runner, Syndey Bruce, a newcomer to the varsity squad, who took a minute off her personal best Saturday. Bruce clocked a time of 20:53.

Palmer junior Ruby Woodings led the Moose with an eighth-place finish on her home trails. Woodings, who set a personal best at Bartlett last week, finished with a time of 19:47. Rya Berrigan was 28th for Palmer, with a time of 20:43.

West Anchorage’s Molly Gellart, the lone runner to crack the 19-minute mark, won the 4A girls race, with a time of 18:40. Kenai Central freshman Jaycie Calvert was the runner-up, with a mark of 19:14.

Wasilla senior Quincy Fuller led all Valley runners in the 4A boys race with a time of 16:41. Karl Greathouse (17:20) was 25th for Wasilla.

The Warriors were seventh in the team standings, with 161 points, two points behind region rival Soldotna in the standings.

Dakota Peterson-Thompson led Colony with a 17th-place finish, and time of 16:55. Ryan Kavalok (27th, 17:23) and Leif Mumma (30th, 17:25) placed in the top 30 for Palmer.

Fin Walker helped West Anchorage sweep the 4A individual titles. Walker placed first in the boys’ race with a time of 16:02.

West Valley of Fairbanks and West Anchorage finished first and second, respectively, in both the 4A boys and girls team standings.

Houston High’s Alison Van Pelt posted a top-10 finish in the 123A girls’ varsity race. Van Pelt was eighth with a time of 21:16.

The Houston Hawks placed fourth in the 123A boys’ team standings. Jens Knutson led Houston with an 18th-place finish, and time of 18:21.

Saturday’s invitational was among the largest ever hosted by Palmer High. The meet included 883 athletes from 44 teams.
