Colony girls, Palmer boys open season with track titles

WASILLA — A Colony freshman enjoyed a big track and field debut.

Elaina Watson won three events to lead the Colony girls to a team title during the Wasilla Warriors Track Mania meet Friday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Field.

Watson finished first in the 100 meters, 200 and long jump for the Knights. The freshman helped Colony finished with 151.5 total points in the team standings.

Palmer took home the boys’ team title with 116 total points. Nick Johnson led the Moose with wins in two events. Johnson was first in both the 100 and the long jump. Larry Cutsforth won the 400 meters for Palmer.

Ruby Woodings and Amy Baxter helped lead the Moose to a runner-up finish in the girls’ class. Woodings finished first in the 800, and Baxter won the 100-meter hurdles.

Lizzie Palmberg of Wasilla Lakes Christian captured the girls’ 400 and defending state champion Ceil Dunleavy, of Wasilla, won the high jump.

Colony, led by a pair of first-place finishes, was second in the boys’ class. Jon Pomrenke won the 200 and Brandon Nicholson finished first in the high jump.

The Wasilla Warriors Track Mania meet was the first of the season.

Moose boys win Palmer meet

The Palmer Moose earned the boys’ team title during the Palmer Track Spring Kickoff Saturday at Palmer High School.

Nick Johnson was one of four Moose to win individual events. Johnson was first in both the 100 and 200. Amiqiq MacLean placed first in the 400, Matthew Daniels won the 110 hurdles and Travis Wheeler finished first in the shot put.

Palmer won the boys team title with 165 total points.

The Palmer boys and Colony girls both won team titles for the second straight day. The Knights finished with 110.5 points to win the girls’ class Saturday. Kristina Tennesen, a defending state champion in the discus, won the event for the Knights. Anna Condio also finished first in the long jump for Colony.

Second-place Palmer scored a pair of individual wins. Ruby Woodings was first in the 400 and Maddie Ko finished first in the 300 hurdles.

Defending state champion Ceil Dunleavy led Wasilla with a win in the high jump. Wasilla Lake Christian’s Lizzie Palmberg (100 hurdles) and Susitna Valley’s Tatum Roderick (200) also won girls’ events.

Colony, which finished second in the boys’ standings, boasted four individual wins. Brandon Nicholson, a defending state champion in the triple jump, won both the long jump and high jump. Jake Hessinger was first in the 300 hurdles and Jarek Schultz won the discus.

Eliasson VanPelt led Wasilla with a victory in the 3,200.
