Colony girls runner-up at Tsalteshi Invite, Palmer junior places 3rd overall

WASILLA — With just about all the top programs in the field, the Tsalteshi Invitational typically provides the season’s first look at where runners and teams may rank in the state. If Saturday’s race is any indication, a few of the top girls in Alaska hail from the Valley.

Palmer junior Ruby Woodings used a personal best to finish third in the varsity girls race, and Colony placed three in the top 20 to finish second in the girls team standings during the annual Tstalteshi Invitational in Soldotna.

Woodings clocked a time of 19 minutes, 32 seconds to place third. The mark is five seconds faster than her previous best, 19:37, posted during the 4A state championships last season. Woodings, who finished sixth at the Colony Invitational last week, was seventh in regions and 12th in state as a sophomore.

Colony, which opened the season last week with a team title in the Colony Invite, finished with 100 total points to place second in the team standings. Sophomore Jill Bowker led the Knights with a time of 19:34 and a sixth-place finish. Bowker finished two seconds behind Woodings, and was one of five runners to finish in a two-second span. Bowker was two seconds behind both Woodings and Kenai’s Riana Boonstra, who was fourth, and just one second behind fifth-place Jaycie Calvert of Kenai.

Jordyn Block (14th) and Cathelyne Powers (18th) also posted top-20 finishes for the Knights, the defending Region III champions.

Alison Van Pelt led the Houston Hawks with a time of 21:27. Jordan Burroughs led Wasilla with a mark of 22:26.

Colony’s Tracen Knopp led Valley boys with a seventh-place finish and a time of 16:36. Knopp was three seconds shy of his personal best of 16:33 he hit at the Tsalteshi Invite last year. Dakota Peterson-Thompson (17:01) finished 15th for the Knights. Peterson-Thompson’s time was a personal best.

Isaak Bell led the Wasilla boys with a time of 17:35. Ryan Kavalok also posted a time of 17:35 to lead Palmer.
