Colony girls take title

SKYVIEW -- Led by a pair individual wins from sprinter Stevie McDowell, the Colony Knights won the girls' team title at the Region III track and field meet at Skyview High School last week.

McDowell has already established herself as the top girls' sprinter in the Valley. Now she is known as the top girls' sprinter in the region. McDowell won both the 100 and 200-meter runs.

Katie Schmidt won the shot put for the Knights. Schmidt edged Palmer's Toni Cox by just two inches.

Though the Knights only had two individuals winners, Colony placed several in the top three.

Colony senior Dominique Colberg placed in the top three in a trio of events. Colberg finished second in the 800 and 3,200 and third in the 1,600.

Shelby Beairsto finished second in both the high jump and the 100 hurdles for the Knights.

Hallie Huggins placed third in the long jump.

The Palmer girls finished third in the team standings. The Moose finished just one point shy of second. Soldotna finished with 94 points, while Palmer tallied 93 points..

The Palmer girls were led by its relay squads.

Palmer's team of Jessie Macknicki, Grace Leacock, Emily Bolling and Sarah Quier edged the Knights' squad of Huggins, Beairsto, McDowell and Amy Burns by just two-tenths of a second in the 800 relay.

The Palmer relay team of Quier, Leacock, Rosanna Lincecum, and Jayme Irvine also edged Colony in the 400 relay.

Palmer also finished second in the 3,200 relay.

Cox led the Palmer throwers with a first and second place finish. The Palmer senior had a toss of just more than 116 feet to win the discus.

Quier finished second to McDowell in both the 100 and 200 runs for the Moose.

McDowell edged Quier by just two-tenths of a second in the 100 and nearly a second in the 200.

Bolling also had a second place finish for the Moose, in the long jump.
