WASILLA — With just more than a month until the Region III Championships swimming and diving meet, at least one thing is becoming abundantly clear.
Region III foes are going to have their eyes on Colony sophomore Jake Simmons.
Simmons remains undefeated in 2015 after scoring two more wins during the Kenai Invitational in Kenai Sept. 19.
“He’s very talented,” Colony head coach Heather Milstead said of Simmons recently.
Simmons, who broke the school record in the 100 backstroke at the Homer Invitational earlier this month, finished first in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 butterfly in Kenai. Simmons clocked a time of 2 minutes, 5.10 seconds in the 200 IM to finish ahead of teammate Joseph Anderson (2:05.56), the runner-up in the event. Simmons used his mark of 55.07 to win the 100 butterfly.
Anderson won the 100 breaststroke, with his time of 1:02.48. Anderson is the defending state champion in the event. His teammate, Elliott Amato, was second.
Colony finished second in the boys’ team standings with 75 total points, four shy of first-place Soldotna.
The Colony girls continued their 2015 success, winning a team title for the second straight weekend. The Knights, who knocked off eight-time Region III champion Kodiak last week en route to a win in the Homer Invite, finished with 92 total points.
Like Simmons, Colony sophomore diver Eileen Cyr extended an undefeated streak with a win in the 1-meter dive. Cyr finished with 181.20 points to finish ahead of runner-up Mikaela Pitsche of Kenai, who finished with 179.10 points.
Camille Dayton finished first in a pair of events for the second straight week. Dayton won the 200 freestyle, with a time of 2:08.32. She was also first in the 500 freestyle, with a mark of 5:45.22. Samantha Belliston also won two events, finishing first in the 200 IM (2:32.45) and 100 butterfly (1:09.18).
Colony’s Alexis Mattson scored a pair of runner-up finishes, placing second in both the 500 free (6:01.87) and 100 breaststroke (1:17.28). Sarah Crosley was second in the 50 freestyle (27.75) for the Knights.
Palmer’s Millie Snelders factored into three wins to help the Moose finish second in the team standings. Snelders won both the 100 freestyle (57.77) and 100 breaststroke (1:15.23), and helped Palmer finish first in the 200 freestyle relay.
McKenzie Musgrave (2:36.77 in the 200 IM) and Savannah Geffken (1:12.84) also finished second for Palmer.
Ashley Phillips led Wasilla with third-place finishes in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly.
On the boys’ side, Max Snelders was also part of three wins for the Moose. Snelders finished first in the 200 freestyle (2:00.28) and 100 freestyle (51.69). He also helped Palmer win the 200 freestyle relay. Gabe Waldhaus was second in the boys’ 1-meter dive.
Palmer finished third in the team standings.
Wasilla’s Braydon Schachle led the Warriors with a first-place finish in the boys’ 1-meter dive. Schachle, the defending state champion, finished with 246.90 total points. Waldhaus was second at 229.55. Koya Barrette was second in the 100 backstroke for Wasilla.
