PALMER — In a battle of Valley products on the mound, a Colony graduate came out on top.
Jacob Butcher, a former Colony High School standout, pitched five scoreless innings to lead the Mat-Su Miners to a 5-0 win over the Anchorage All-Stars Saturday evening at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.
Kyle Bovy, a Palmer High School graduate, took the mound for the Anchorage squad, and worked seven innings. Bovy, who has pitched for the Alaska Baseball League’s Anchorage Glacier Pilots in the past, scattered seven hits and three earned runs.
Butcher allowed only two hits and fanned two in five innings. He threw 43 pitches, 34 for strikes. Butcher, one of two Valley natives on the Miners this summer, lowered his earned run average to 2.50. He is now 2-0 with nine strikeouts in 18 innings of work. Wasilla product Nolan Monaghan is also pitching for the Miners this summer.
Mike Antico and Elijah MacNamee had two hits each for the Miners in the nonleague win. Five different Miners scored runs and four different players had an RBI.
Pilots 8, Miners 0
The Miners were shutout for just the second time this summer, dropping an 8-0 decision to the Anchorage Glacier Pilots Monday night in Anchorage.
Anchorage designated hitter Sam Cohen drove in four runs to lead the Pilots to their first win over the Miners this summer.
Mat-Su leadoff hitter Quinn Cotton collected three of Mat-Su’s seven hits. He cranked his eighth double of the summer and raised his batting average to .380.
Miners, Bucs rained out
Mat-Su’s game against the Bucs in Anchorage Sunday was rained out. The game has been rescheduled and will be part of a doubleheader on July 26.
