Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

SEWARD — Former Colony High School run and ski standout Eric Strabel notched his fourth career runner-up finish in the men’s division of Mount Marathon Sunday in Seward.
Strabel powered his way up 3,022 feet of elevation gain and raced his way to the finish line in downtown Seward in 45 minutes and 42 seconds. Strabel, who now calls Anchorage home, posted an uphill time of 34:55, according to race results, and needed just 10:47 to work his way down the mountain to the finish line.
Palmer’s Darin Markwardt, another former Colony skier and runner, finished seventh in the men’s division with a time of 47:21.
Rory Egelus and Aaron Dickson, both of Palmer, finished 28th and 29th respectively.
UAA ski coach Trond Flagstad won his second Mount Marathon in three years. Defending champion Matias Saari, of Anchorage, finished third.
Nearly 30 men from the Mat-Su Valley finished the 83rd Mount Marathon.
Gail Taylor, of Wasilla, was the top Valley runner in the women’s division, finishing seventh. Taylor posted a time of 59:32. Palmer’s Kate Fitzgerald (eighth), Alisa Kincaid (16th) and Desiree Dietz (23rd) also finished in the top 25.
Cedar Bourgeois won her seventh straight title in the women’s division. Holly Brooks, of Anchorage, was second.
Lyon Kopsack was the top Valley runner in the junior race, finishing seventh in the boys’ division with a time of 30:03. Alyson Kopsack, 10, was fifth in the girls’ division with a time of 38:55.
