Colony High graduate wins Division II national track championship

WALNUT, Calif. — Former Colony High School track and field standout and University of Alaska Anchorage sophomore David Registe has made UAA history.

Registe became the first Seawolf athlete to win a national title with a victory in the long jump at the 2008 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Walnut, Calif., on Thursday.

The 2006 graduate of Colony High entered the competition with the nation’s third-best jump, and left as his school’s first national champion after his leap of 24 feet and 8 1/2 inches. Already the owner of UAA and Great Northwest Athletic Conference records in the event, Registe finished two-and-three-quarter inches better than second-place Joe Kindred of St. Augustine.

Registe earned All-American honors with his win, becoming the third UAA athlete — and the first Seawolf male athlete — to be tagged with that title.

The 2008 championships marks Registe second appearance in the Division II national event. He placed 12th in the long jump in the 2007 championships.
