Colony hosts borough cross-country event

Colony hosted the Mat-Su Borough cross-country meet Wednesday amidst a chilly windy afternoon.

The five borough schools--Palmer, Colony, Wasilla, Houston and Su Valley all participated in the event. Varsity and junior varsity runners participated in a separate boy's and girl's race.

The course was a beautiful layout of mowed grass through the woods behind Colony High School. The course was shortened to 3,535 meters this year from the usual 5,000 meters. It was shortened so that runners competing in this weekend's Kodiak cross- country meet would not be worn out going into the Kodiak event, which starts today.

The Colony team won the overall girl's event, followed by Su Valley, Palmer, Wasilla, and Houston.

Palmer won the overall boys' event, followed by Colony, then Wasilla.

In the girls' race, Dominique Colberg of Colony out-paced the competition by a far margin, winning the race by one minute and six seconds over second place finisher Taz Mannix of Su Valley. Colberg finished the race in 13 minutes and 30 seconds.

"The coach (Mark Doner) wanted me to take it easy today," said Colberg. "But I ran faster than I was supposed to."

Palmer's Drew Dickson ran just ahead of brother Aaron Dickson to win the boys' race. He finished the course in 11 minutes and 48 seconds.

The Dickson brothers wasted no time in jumping out in front of the other runners and separating themselves from the pack.

"I started running hard about 300 yards in," said Drew Dickson. "I don't like running in groups."
