Colony junior grabs distance wins at Palmer Invite

PALMER — Colony junior Audrey Michaelson dominated the distance events during the Palmer Invitational at Palmer High School on Friday.

Michaelson, the defending state champion in the 3,200 meters, won three events during the meet. The Colony junior finished first in the 3,200 with a time of 12 minutes and 6.78 seconds. Michaelson also used a mark of 2:30.20 to win the 800 and a time of 5:16.68 to finish first in the 1,600, and about nine seconds ahead of the competition. Her time in the 1,600 was also her season best.

Michaelson was one of a pair of Valley athletes to win three events. Houston senior Colton Buzby finished first in the boys’ 100, 200 and 400.

Senior Rachael Huffman swept the throwing events, winning the girls shot put and discus.

Huffman used a personal best throw of 37-7 to win the shot put and finish just a foot ahead of teammate Taylor Blake.

Blake, a junior, also posted a personal best with her throw of 37-6.

Senior Mason Minturn led the Palmer boys with a win in the 800 and a runner-up finish in the 1,600. Lyon Kopsack led the Colony boys with a victory in the 3,200.

Houston junior Ben Bayne was first in the 110-meter hurdles and Colony sophomore Ariana Saxon was first in the girls’ 200.

Palmer is also hosting the Region III track and field championships, which begin Friday at Palmer High.
