Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

WASILLA — Brandon Nicholson is on a tear.
For the second straight week, Nicholson notched the track and field hat trick. The Colony junior finished first in three individual events to help Colony finish second overall in the boys’ team standings of the Kenai Invitational April 23 in Kenai.
Nicholson won the high jump, long jump and triple jump events. Nicholson hit 6 feet to win the high jump, landed a mark of 20-9 in the long jump and 44-2.5 in the triple jump. He also finished second in the 400 meters.
Dakota Peterson-Thompson finished second in the 1,600 for the Colony boys.
Colony finished with 105 total points in the team standings, seven shy of first-place Anchorage Christian School.
Palmer, led by a pair of relay wins, finished third in the team standings, with 85 points.
Palmer won both the 400 and 800 relays. The Moose were also second in the 1,600 relay and third in the 3,200 relay.
Brady Southwick was the runner-up in two events, finishing second in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Chase Ferris was second in the 100.
Quincy Fuller led sixth-place Wasilla with a win in the 3,200 meters.
Colony used a pair of individual wins and a relay victory to finish third in the girls’ standings.
Kristian Tennesen won the girls’ discus for the fourth straight meet. Her latest victory came with a throw of 111-9. Anna Condio was first in the triple jump, and Colony won the 3,200 relay race.
Colony finished with 81.5 total points in the girls’ standings.
Palmer and Wasilla finished tied in the girls’ standings with 42 points each.
Ceil Dunleavy, a two-time defending state champion in the girls’ high jump, finished first in the event for Wasilla, with a mark of 5-5. Palmer was led by a victory in the 1,600 relay.
