Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

ANCHORAGE — Peggy Mathis continued her early-season tear with three more wins during the Pro/Whit Invitational at The Dome Saturday in Anchorage.
The Colony junior, who opened her 2014 season with multiple victories during the Big C Relays earlier this month, finished first in the 100-, 400- and 800-meter events Saturday. Mathis used a time of 12.90 seconds to place first in the 100, and edge runner-up Tanner Ealum of Anchorage Christian School. With a time of 1:00.16, Mathis finished a second faster than Ealum to win the 400. Mathis posted a time of 2:26 in the 800 to place first, four seconds faster than runner-up Cheyenne Applegate of Grace Christian.
Led by Mathis, Colony finished second in the girls team standings with 89 total points.
Freshman Cathelyne Powers also picked up a win for the Knights, finishing first in the 3,200. Powers was also third in the 1,600. The Knights also finished first in the 3,200-meter relay.
Fischer Summers led the Colony boys with a win in the shot put. Summers used a throw of 45 feet, 1 inch to win the event. Colony’s D.J. Mutini was fifth.
The Knights also won the boys’ 3,200-meter relay.
Colony was the lone Valley school at the eight-team event.
All of the Valley programs are slated to compete in the Mat-Su Valley Mini, slated for today at 2:30 p.m. at Wasilla High School.
