Colony poets picked for book

Middle school honored as one of top 10 schools

PALMER — The students at Colony Middle School have a way with words, and accordingly, the school was honored as one of 10 Poetic Achievement Honor Schools.

Twenty-one poems written by students in Linda Volkman's class at CMS were selected for inclusion in "A Celebration of Young Poets,"a collection of the top poetry among students in the Pacific Northwest for the fall 2000 semester.

Volkman's class also competed for a $250 grant against nine other schools.

"The students were real excited about getting their poems selected for the book," Volkman said last month, before school was out.

"It's quite an honor to have that many poems picked for the book," Volkman said.

A poem Sarah Christine Hendricks, a seventh-grader, wrote was selected as one of the top 10 in her age group among all submitted poems.

For her award-winning poem, titled "Metamorphosis," Hendricks received special recognition in the book, a complimentary copy of the poetry collection and a $50 savings bond.

Colony students published were Hendricks and Tanya Ortner, who was mistakenly included in the fourth- to sixth-grade category in the book but should have correctly been in the seventh- to ninth-grade division.
