Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

PALMER —As a junior at the ASAA state meet, Brandon Nicholson broke one of the oldest marks in the Alaska prep track and field record book. Nicholson hit 46 feet, 2 inches in the triple jump, which shattered a 23-year-old state record of 45-10.75 set by Soldotna’s Joel Mahaffey in 1993.
“I was so excited to break that last year,” Nicholson said earlier this spring.
But Nicholson wasn’t done there.
“I want to do better than what I’ve already done,” Nicholson said.
The Colony senior standout wanted to hit 47 feet. Saturday, Nicholson accomplished that goal. Nicholson notched a personal-best leap of 47-2 to win his fourth straight conference title in the triple jump during the final day of the Region III Championships in Homer. The jump was just part of a huge day for Nicholson, a UAA track and field recruit. The future Seawolf also won his fourth straight region title in the high jump, thanks to his mark of 6-2.
And that’s in addition to his win in the long jump on Friday.
Three titles in 2017. Nine golds in his career.
Nicholson also helped Colony sweep the team titles. Nicholson and the Colony boys finished with 154 points in the boys’ team standings, besting Region III track power Kodiak by 32 points.
The Colony boys also scored a win in the 400-meter relay. Ty Campbell, Ridge Patrimonio-Ravel, Jacob Hessinger and Zane Vrvillo combined to post a time of 46.54 seconds.
A pair of Colony seniors helped the Knights win the girls’ title for the second straight year. Coleen Geraghty and Jill Bowker each won individual events and were also part of Colony’s win in the 3,200 relay.
Friday, Bowker was the lone runner in the 3,200 meters to crack the 12-minute mark, and won the event with a season-best time of 11:51.78. Saturday, Geraghty posted a time of 5:27.69 to win the 1,600.
Bowker and Geraghty teamed with Alyssa Miles and Cathelyne Powers to win the 3,200 relay.
Kristina Tennesen and Elaina Watson also earned victories for the Knights. Tennesen, the defending state champion in the discus, earned a region title in the event Friday. Watson finished first in the 200 meters Saturday.
The Knights finished with 205 points in the girls’ team standings, 80 more than runner-up Kenai.
Colony’s Mark Strabel and Charlie Yoder earned Region III Coach of the Year honors.
Palmer, led by senior Ruby Woodings, finished third in the team standings with 106 total points. Woodings, who was named the most outstanding girls’ athlete at the meet, factored into three victories.
Woodings finished first in both the 400 and 800, and helped Palmer win the 1,600 relay. Woodings teamed with Madi Ko, Amy Baxter and Rya Berrigan in the race.
Ko also scored a pair of wins for Palmer. Ko hit a personal best 16-0.25 to win the long jump, and also finished first in the triple jump. Palmer’s Teeana Nicholai won the 100 meters.
Wasilla’s Ceil Dunleavy also added another gold to her list of prep accomplishments. Dunleavy, the three-time defending state champion in the high jump, earned her third region win in the event with a mark of 5-4 Friday.
