Colony senior, Palmer senior grab top-10 finishes at Tsalteshi Invite

WASILLA — Tsalteshi Trails in Soldotna is the home of the 2016 Region III Championships. Saturday, local prep cross-country runners had a chance to get a first-hand look at what will be this season’s championship course.

And if what happened Saturday holds true, a few Valley athletes appear to be in the mix for the top spots in the region.

Colony senior Tracen Knopp and Palmer senior Ruby Woodings each posted top-10 finishes during the annual Tsalteshi Invitational to highlight the day for the Valley.

Knopp used a personal best time of 16 minutes and 15 seconds to finish third in the boys’ race.

“I’m pretty excited as a mom and a coach,” Colony head coach Rhonda Knopp said via cell phone from the team bus as the Knights made their way back to the Valley Saturday night. “We felt good. It lets him know where he is at.”

Knopp was also the second runner from Region III to cross the finish line. He was just behind runner-up Keith Osowski of Kodiak, who finished one second ahead of Knopp.

“He picked it up and just pushed it to the finish,” the head coach said.

Woodings used a time of 20:06 to finish seventh in the girls race. The senior, who also finished seventh at the Colony Invite last week with a time of 21:06, took a full minute off her time Saturday.

“We’re looking for a strong year,” Palmer head coach John Bishop said of Woodings earlier in the year.

Woods was the top runner from Region III in the girls’ race.

Led by Woodings, Palmer placed fourth in the team standings with 155 total points, one ahead of Colony.

The girls’ race also featured top-20 performances by Colony’s Jill Bowker and Houston’s Allison VanPelt. Bowker was 11th, with a time of 20:20, and the second Region III runner to cross the finish line in the race. VanPelt finished 15th, with a mark of 20:27. VanPelt was the No. 3 runner from the 123A class in the race.

The Colony boys used 219 points to finish seventh in the standings.
