PALMER - Robert Fitch hit a double, and baseball season has not even started yet.
Last week, the Colony High School senior signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Jamestown (N.D.) College football team. Fitch said he also plans to play for the school's NAIA baseball squad.
“I'm excited,” Fitch said on Saturday, while on a school-sponsored trip to Washington D.C. “I just can't wait until football season starts now. I just want to get down there and show them what I can do.”
Fitch was on the Colony squad that advanced to the state championship game in October. He played on offense, defense and special teams for the Railbelt Conference champions, seeing the most time at wide receiver and defensive back.
“I'm anxious just to get down there and keep playing,” Fitch said.
Fitch plans to play wide receiver for the Jimmies football squad, and study physical therapy at the university. Fitch received athletic and academic scholarships, his father Rob Fitch said.
On the baseball field, Fitch said he hopes to play center field, a position where he earned second-team all-conference honors for the Knights baseball team last year.
Fitch said he could also catch for the Jimmies.
“I known as more of a utility player,” Fitch said. “I'll play where ever they need me.”
The Jamestown baseball squad has seen tremendous success recently, winning a region championship last season and earning a bid to the NAIA World Series in 2004.
The Jimmies play in the Dakota Athletic Conference, the same league as Valley City State, a football program that has created a pipeline between Alaska and North Dakota.
