At the end of the second week of their first year at high school, the freshmen at Colony stared blankly at the chalkboard as they would any other Friday morning. Little did they know that only moments later, seniors would storm their rooms taking them one by one to join the rest of their confused classmates in the commons area.
An aroma of French toast and maple syrup surrounded them as they were served a second breakfast prepared by the seniors and the administration at 6:30 a.m. Before they knew it, these freshmen had become a part of the tradition at Colony High School, known as the Freshman/Senior Breakfast.
This event, hosted by Colony's Link Crew organization, was established to break the barrier between seniors and freshmen and to provide them with a smooth transition into high school. Link Crew is a yearlong commitment which includes events throughout the entire year.
Beginning with freshmen orientation in the fall and following through with numerous surprise activities, Link Crew continuously provides a bridge between these classes.
"We came into high school expecting to be trash-canned, but we were served breakfast instead," said Colony freshman Amber Sawyer.
The seniors do more than feed the freshmen, they entertain as well. Scavenger hunts, costumes and skits introduce the ninth graders to the art of balancing both work and fun.
At the breakfast, seniors and freshmen alike gave stellar performances on the karaoke machine, proving that if the football team can sing along with Britteny Spears then freshman can have confidence to succeed in high school.
