Colony sophomore leads Valley runners in Bartlett Invite

PALMER — During his freshman season, Gavin Block cracked the 17-minute mark just once.

Now a sophomore, Block has already done it twice. The Colony High School runner broke 17 minutes for the second straight week, leading all Valley runners with a time of 16 minutes, 47 seconds during the Bartlett Invitational Aug. 26 in Anchorage.

“We’re looking to have him stay consistent, do what he’s doing,” Colony co-head coach Norm Rousey said of Block earlier this season. “If he continues to improve, the sky’s the limit to see where it leads.”

Block finished 11th overall in the varsity boys’ race, and came within five seconds of the personal best time of 16:47 he clocked the week before at the Tsalteshi Invitational in Soldotna. Block was one of two Valley runners to finish in the top 20 of the boys’ race. Wasilla sophomore Hunter Hayes finished 18th with a time of 17:07.

Palmer freshman Sophie Wright led Valley runners with an 18th-place finish in the varsity girls’ race. Wright clocked a time of 20:36, a personal best.

Wasilla finished 10th in the boys team standings, just ahead of 11th-place Colony. Palmer led Valley teams with an 11th-place finish in the girls’ standings. Colony was 12th.

Valley teams hit the Michael Janecek Trails Saturday for the annual Palmer Invitational. The varsity races begin at 1:15 p.m. with Division II girls (the old 123A level), and the Division boys follow at 1:45 p.m. The Division I girls and boys races are scheduled for 2:15 and 2:45 p.m. Athletes from 37 schools are expected to participate.
