Colony sophomore scores top-10 finish at Tsalteshi Invite

PALMER — Colony co-head coach Norm Rousey didn’t need to see the final results to gauge the Knights work during the Tsalteshi Invitational Soldotna. Rousey was impressed with what he saw on the trail during the Aug. 19 event.

“I wasn’t even that antsy to look at (the results),” Rousey said by cellphone. “With the overall improvement of the whole team, I felt good about where everyone was.”

Several Knights throughout the program recorded personal bests and one Colony runner, sophomore Gavin Block, used a personal record to land himself in the top 7 of the varsity boys race. Block finished with a career best time of 16 minutes, 42 seconds to finish seventh.

“I was really impressed with Gavin,” Rousey said.

It’s just the second time in his career that Block cracked the 17-minute mark. His prior best was a 16:53 at the Su Valley Invite near Talkeetna last year. In the Tsalteshi last season, Block finished 32nd with a time of 17:26. Rousey said he’s excited for continued success for Block.

Block was the top Valley runner in the boys race. Freshman Lane Meier notched a top-20 finish for the Colony boys, placing 19th with a mark of 17:05.

Colony’s senior leader in a program that’s very young this season, Jill Bowker, led all Valley runners in the girls race with a 16th-place finish and time of 20:37.

Wasilla also had a runner in the top 20 of the boys race. Sophomore Hunter Hayes finished 17th, with a mark of 17:04. Senor Lev Robertson led the Palmer boys with a time of 17:24 and placed 26th.

The Palmer girls placed a runner in the top 20, and three in the top 31. Freshman Sophie Wright (20:47) placed 18th, and sophomores Lydia Ortiz (21:30) and Nina Kalytiak (21:32) finished 29th and 31st.

The Valley programs continue the season with the Bartlett State Preview Meet Saturday in Anchorage.
