Colony swimmers break school records

PALMER — Colony program records fell as the Knights swimming and diving squad competed in the Homer Invitational last week.

Jake Simmons broke a pair of records, setting new marks in both the 100-yard backstroke and 200 freestyle relay. Simmons used a time of 52.87 seconds to win the 100 backstroke and set the new school record. It’s also the fastest time ever recorded by a Valley swimmer in the event.

A newcomer to the squad, Gabe Vestri Giovanni, also set a school record. Giovanni, a foreign exchange student from Italy, broke the 50 freestyle record with his lead off in the 200 freestyle. His time was 22.16.

The Knights finished third in both the boys and girls team standings. Simmons and Giovanni helped the Knights finish with 47 points in the boys’ standings.

Simmons was first in the 100 backstroke and second in the 200 freestyle. Giovanni was first in the 50 freestyle. Both helped Colony win the 200 freestyle relay.

Camille Dayton helped Colony finish with 63 points in the girls’ standings. Dayton finished first in the 500 freestyle and second in the 200 individual medley.

Moose, Warriors earn team titles

The Palmer Moose and Wasilla Warriors earned team titles during the Wasilla Invitational last week.

Savannah Geffken, Ashtyn Peterson and Gretchen Snelders scored two wins each to help Palmer finish with 111 points in the girls’ team standings. Geffken was first in the 100 and 200 freestyle races, Peterson finished first in the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley, and Snelders won the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

Wasilla finished first in the boys’ standings with 77 total points, edging second-place Palmer’s 75.

Ben Henderson led the Warriors with wins in the 50 and 500 freestyle races. Miles Laughlin (200 freestyle), Koya Barrette (200 IM) and Camren Hancock (100 backstroke) also won races.

Max Snelders led the Palmer boys with a victory in the 100 breaststroke.
