Colony swimmers strong in first meet

PALMER — Colony High School swimmers are off to a fast start to the season with strong showings from its girls’ and boys’ teams at Saturday’s Colony Relays at the Palmer High School pool.

Both teams finished second and impressed head coach Dawn Brettrager.

“I’m really pleased,” she said. “I think we’re ahead of schedule at this point compared to where we’ve been in the past. We did quite well. We have several new people on both boys and girls, so this was their first meet.”

Because state rules say swimmers need at least 10 practices before competing in a meet, many of the teams didn’t have their full complements, Brettrager said.

“Still, this is a very good indicator for what the rest of the season’s going to hold,” she said. “Some of the new kids swam extremely competitive times.”

She was also impressed with the performance of Chase Talbot, a diver on last year’s team now making a transition to swimming events.

“He did mostly freestyle and the open 100 (on Saturday),” she said. “He didn’t do swimming last year, so to get in the water and be just over a minute in his 100 was pretty impressive.”

Also impressive was the quality shown by other Valley teams, Brettrager said.

“They have some competitors,” she said. “Probably the one thing we have going for us at Colony is the numbers we have. That means we can fill our relays, so I think our numbers will really be to our advantage.”

Colony will next see action this weekend at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks, then Sept. 11 in Homer for a first look at other teams in the region.
