Colony's varsity squad was not the only team applying pressure, as the Knights' junior varsity attacked the Wasilla zone early and often to shoot to a 6-1 win over the Warriors' junior varsity team Monday at Brett Memorial Ice Arena.
Colony shot 47 shots on goal while Wasilla shot 27.
"Our puck movement was good tonight," said Colony coach Scott Lantto. "We concentrated on getting inside for rebounds."
On the opening face-off, the Knights immediately worked the puck into the Wasilla zone and scored 27 seconds into the game. Jamie Allen knocked in a pass from Garrett Wilkens on the weak side past the outstretched stick of Warrior goalie Stephan Erdman. Travis Jones also assisted the goal.
Colony moved up 2-0 when Nolan Rein and Chris Arentz swept down the middle of the Warrior zone, with Arentz feeding Rein for the dump-in goal with 3:07 left in the first period.
Colony made the score 3-0 with 9:34 remaining in the second period.
A shot by Arentz from the outside bounced off the pads of Erdman and stopped behind him just short of the goal line. Jordan Smith swept into the crease from the right side and tucked the loose puck in the net. Arentz and Rein were credited with assists on the goal.
Colony added its fourth goal when Jones sat open in front of the Wasilla goal and swept a pass from Allen deep in the right side.
The goal came at 7:13 in the second. Allen and Arentz picked up assists on the goal, giving Arentz his third assist of the game.
Wasilla cut into the lead at 3:34 left in the period when Andrew Tumbleson stuffed in a rebound past the glove hand of Colony goalie Tony Keller.
The Knights picked up their fifth goal on a shot by Jones from 15 feet in front of the net at 7:20 in the third period. The shot hit Erdman's stick, deflected through the five-hole, and trickled into the net.
Colony capped the scoring with 33 seconds left in the contest on a wrist shot by Arentz over the glove of Erdman.
"We've struggled with teamwork early this year," said Lantto. "We came together tonight."
