Colony wins 2 wrestling tournaments on the same day

MAT-SU — The Colony Knights have used superior depth two win the last two 4A state team titles.

On Saturday, the Colony wrestling program proved its depth once again. The Knights sent seperate teams to two different tournaments over the weekend and won the team titles at both.

Colony recorded more than double the total points of runner-up Sitka and cruised to the title during the Pilot Invitational at Juneau-Douglas High School.

In Homer, the Knights won the Round Robin Rumble.

Nine different Knights won their weight classes at the Pilot Invite.

Warren Mielke (103), Isaac Wilson (112), Kyle Wilson (125), Sam Loggins (130), Josh West (140), Jake Pfieffer (145), Bridger VanNess (171), Angelo Bellotte (189) and Eric Fan (285) all won titles at the 16-team tourney.

Ryan Knutson (152), Kenny Boykin (160) and Renn Wright (215) also advanced to the finals for Colony and placed second.

Chase Montgomery (130) and Tim Edwards (171) finished first for the Knights at the Round Robin Rumble. Matt Vuckich (125), Kyle Boss (135), Joe Fujimoto (152), Trey Farber (171) and Thad Meutz finished second for CHS.

Tonight, the Knights will host a tri-meet at Colony High School. The event, which also includes Palmer and Houston, starts at 5:30 p.m.

Hawks sixth at West Valley

FAIRBANKS — The Houston Hawks finished sixth in the West Valley Invitaitonal in Fairbanks on Saturday.

Senior Justin Crowley won the 215-pound weight class to lead the Hawks. Crowley pinned Tok’s Chase Kraus with 10 seconds left in the first period to score the win.

Crowley was the lone Houston wrestler to advance to the finals, but three Hawks worked their way into the consolation finals.

Aaron Richardson and Arron Reese each finished third for Houston, and Drew Drake was fourth.

Richardson used a 9-0 major decision over Lathrop’s Kyle Curry at 130. At 152, Reese scored an 8-2 win over Jesse Deaton, of Valdez.

Drake suffered a loss by technical fall to Cody Decker, of North Pole, at 112. Decker was seeded second at the weight class.
