MAT-SU — The Colony Knights hosted their first wrestling tournament in the school's history March 9. Colony's top-ranked 215-pound wrestler, James Winter, and the state's second-ranked heavyweight wrestler, Josh Savage, won the final two matches of the tournament to secure a 23.5 point victory over the second-place Dimond team.
Mieckel Delaney, Adam Gillette and Dan Pickett also captured individual championships to help power the Knights.
Palmer Moose contender Crispin Gentry, who is ranked fourth in the state, took the top spot in the 189-pound class with a victory over Mark Nistler of East while his teammate, Andy Anderson, the state's top-ranked 112-pound wrestler, won his weight class. The Moose finished in third place with 156.5 points.
Although the Wasilla Warriors finished fifth in the Colony Invitational with 89.5 points, part of the Warrior wrestling team split off to travel to compete in the Kodiak's Robin Hervey Tournament on the same weekend. Those team members included Jed Wade, 171, Ben Olson, 145, Ryan Olivera, 135, top-ranked Jordan Brock and Gunnar Brannon, 103.
Wade Brock and Brannon all won their respective weight classes at the Kodiak tournament.
