Alaska’s finally discovered warm weather — it’s time for you to totally bask in it!
Free your mind and body from its winter harness and come out for the third annual Tri the Trails Triathlon. The triathlon begins at 9 a.m., June 29 at the Matanuska Lakes State Park with an 800-meter swim in the lake leading, followed by a 13-mile bike ride and a 4-mile run on the trails, providing a challenging, refreshing feast amidst the spacious beauty of the Valley. Well-conditioned athletes at least 18 years old are encouraged to bring their helmets and come enjoy the day. And if they can possibly find a friend or two as hardy as they are, invite them along to race, too.
Also, bring the kids! This year we’ve added a kids duathlon, a 1-K run, 2-K bike and 1-K run for ages 5-13. It starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Tri the Trails location. You can register the day of the race from 8 to 10:15 a.m., but remember a helmet is required and protective gear is recommended. The duathlon is not timed, but parents are encouraged to be at each transition point to cheer on their children and help steer them in the right direction. They are also welcome on the course to help their child if necessary. Each child will receive a participation T-shirt.
These events are sponsored by the great folks at BIONIC Chiropractic, Active Soles, Backcountry Bicycles, Mat-Su Parks and Recreation, Fox Run Campground, Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, Smart Energy Works, F-E Contracting and Dr. Newell Walther DDS.
These should be really fun events and we think they will nicely round out your summer. The trails await you. For more information on both races, check trithetrails.com frequently for updates or call 745-4357.
