Several hundred community members turned out to the Veterans' Wall of Honor for a special remembrance ceremony held in conjunction with Veterans' Day.
Gen. Craig Christensen gave the keynote address, with the theme of "Past, present and future." He talked about the history of military activity in Alaska, from Attu Island during World War II to today.
The theme was echoed throughout the ceremony. During the presentation of the colors, the past -- former prisoner of war Walt Fergus -- raised the POW/MIA flag; Naomi Marden -- a petty officer in the U.S. Navy -- raised the American flag; while the future, ROTC cadet Logan Michaelson, raised the Alaska flag.
Jack Cowan of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9365 presented an enormous American flag, which was flown above the USS Arizona last July 4. The flag was part of a salute to the veterans who served on the Arizona.
